Earlier this week, we discussed about how intellectual technological innovations gave us new things while also silently robbing us of others.

In the 1960s, after the Xerox 914 Copier was introduced, insightful managers noticed that when they failed to align their work practices to the new innovation, their workers lost their skills.

Without any guidance, workers adopted the intellectual technology as a replacement of hard manual labor in copying documents and manuscripts.

However, this did more harm than good.

“The machine made us lazy. It’s easier to generate 50 copies than write a 1-page summary.” Some workers revealed.

To reverse the trends, the managers introduced new work practices that limited copying only to what was necessary and in turn, saved the productive lives of their workers.

Today, Generative AI represents a foundational intellectual technology.

Although it delivers the efficiency of instant summaries and faster outputs, it also robs us of the productive friction we need to get better in some tasks which compound over time.

With guidance on how best we can integrate Generative AI into our workflows we can:

  • Still get better at cognitive skills such as reading, thinking, and writing which improve as our mind struggles over time and also

  • Leverage the capabilities of the technology to extend our intuition

This week, we introduce a playbook on the sovereign mind, a mind that masterfully knows when to intentionally use AI and when to avoid it.

Use the playbook we will share this week to guide your own workflows, ensuring that you still get better at things that demand productive struggle.
