When the late Charlie Munger wanted to make investment decisions, one of the tools he often used didn’t come from his core work (investment).

It came from evolutionary biology, a concept known as the Red Queen Effect. It states that for species to survive, they must constantly adapt, evolve, and proliferate.

Using this insight, Munger and Buffet intentionally avoided investing in commodity businesses such as textiles.

They knew that if one textile company acquired a newer and modern loom, the rest would also purchase them and the innovation would only benefit the customer. This was the Red Queen Effect at play as businesses sought survival.

Zooming out, we see a modern polymath in action. While Charlie’s main work was investment, his broad knowledge in evolutionary biology also helped him make better decisions.

Earlier this week, we saw how polymaths who were successful such as Leonardo da Vinci, relied on an underlying structure to stack their skills.

While specializing in art and painting, da Vinci applied insights from engineering to anatomy to create impeccable art pieces.

Today, information is no longer the constraint; it’s the ability to synthesize ideas from different fields and apply them to create something new and solve our problems.

AI is the perfect tool at our disposal to identify ideas from other fields without having to do the menial work of deep study.

This week, we have a mini-workshop to help the modern knowledge worker become a functional and successful polymath, one with a versatile mind.

In our mini-workshop, we will use Obsidian and AI to develop versatile minds that can synthesize ideas from different departments when solving problems and innovating solutions.
